Understanding Why Cats Hide Pain

For many cat owners in Kamloops, it can be frustrating to figure out when your pet is feeling unwell. Unlike dogs, cats hide pain so that their predators in the wild can’t see them as vulnerable. Understanding why cats hide pain can help you identify when your cat is feeling ill and needs medical attention.

The Instinct to Hide Pain

Cats have an instinctual drive to hide pain and discomfort because they are hardwired to survive in the wild. When a cat is injured or sick, they become more vulnerable to predators and other dangers, making it essential for them to conceal any signs of weakness or illness. In response, cats will often mask their pain by acting normal around humans and other animals; this behaviour is referred to as “masking” or “camouflaging” their pain. As a result, it can be difficult for owners to detect signs of illness in their cats unless they know what to look for.

Signs of Pain in Cats

There are some subtle signs that may indicate your cat is in pain that you should keep an eye out for. These include

  • Changes in activity level (decreased activity)
  • Hiding away from people and other animals (hiding away could indicate a decrease in socialization)
  • Eating less than usual (less appetite)
  • Changes in sleeping patterns (sleeping more than usual)
  • Changes in grooming habits (poor grooming habits may indicate that your cat feels weak or uncomfortable)
  • Vocalizing more often than usual (meowing at night could mean your pet is not feeling well)
  • Avoiding being touched or petted (they may hiss if you try to touch them)
  • Exhibiting unusual aggression towards people or animals (swatting).

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to bring your cat in to The Cat Hospital for a checkup as soon as possible.

Cats are excellent at masking their pain due to their instinctual need for survival; however, understanding why cats hide pain can help owners identify when something isn’t quite right with their pets.
